Prostate cancer treatment used to involve surgical removal of the prostate, often involving longer and more painful hospitalizations, significant blood loss, incontinence, and sexual dysfunction. Advancements in robotics have dramatically changed patient outcomes in prostate cancer treatment.

da Vinci System for prostate cancer treatment.Prostate cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the prostate. The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra which empties urine from the bladder. The prostate gland produces fluid which makes up part of the semen.

Prostate cancer affects nearly 1 in 5 men. Many men are diagnosed at a relatively early, curable stage.  Although surgical removal offers the best chance for long-term cure, it’s associated with longer and more painful hospitalizations, significant blood loss, incontinence, and sexual dysfunction. Part of the reason open surgery is so challenging is because the prostate resides deep in the pelvis.

Using the daVinci robot a urological surgeon can operate deep in the pelvis with a 10x magnified, 3D high definition view using instruments more precise than the human hand. Having played sports, piano, lead guitar, and video games since I was young, robotic surgery is a natural fit for me.  I’ve successfully utilized it on my patients with prostate cancer since 2007.  It truly is the greatest advancement in surgery I have ever seen, because it offers:

  • Clinically Superior Results
  • Reduced Risk of Complications
  • Quicker Recovery Period
  • Minimizes Scarring

If you’d like to see me operate the daVinci robot during surgery, watch this video. I am the the only urological surgeon with hundreds of cases performed. This is one of my passions!

When it comes to prevention, PSA screening save lives.  Since using PSA to screen for risk of prostate cancer, we’ve seen a decrease in the mortality of prostate cancer by over 40%!   Men, know your number, my PSA is 0.5, get tested and know yours.
