No-Scalpel Vasectomy

What is a vasectomy?
A vasectomy is the most effective permanent birth control as it’s 99.999 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. The procedure works by eliminating sperm in a man’s semen. It’s that simple. Once the procedure is complete and you’ve been cleared by Dr. Edmunds, that’s it—you and your partner won’t need to do anything else to prevent pregnancy. No additional birth control to buy, use, keep up with or worry about.

No-scalpel vasectomy How It Works

The procedure is performed by Dr. Edmunds in our office in about 12 minutes. You’ll listen to some good tunes and won’t feel a thing. Using local anesthesia, Dr. Edmunds will make a tiny opening and then divide and seal the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation). By dividing the vas deferens, sperm can no longer exit the body, therefore you can no longer get anyone pregnant.

One small stitch is used to close the skin and dissolves on its own. Most patients return to work after a weekend of rest. Protected sex can resume in a few weeks, and after 20 ejaculations, a semen analysis will confirm the success of the procedure. Capitol Urology partners with Fellow, a CLIA-certified diagnostics lab, to provide post-vasectomy semen analysis that allows patients to provide a sample in the comfort of their own home. With Fellow, you provide a semen sample, mail it off and get results quickly.

If you’re considering a vasectomy, the first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Edmunds. This initial appointment (often the same week as your procedure) will give you the opportunity to see the office, meet the staff and talk with Dr. Edmunds to get a full overview of the procedure. You’ll also receive a quick exam so Dr. Edmunds can check your anatomy to ensure an in-office, no-scalpel vasectomy is right for you. The consultation will put you at ease so you’ll have everything you need to know and do before your surgery (shower, shave, avoid certain medications and fill any prescriptions for surgery day).

Benefits of a Vasectomy

After a vasectomy, you and your partner will no longer have to worry about birth control disrupting the moment. Nothing ruins the mood like the stresses of ovulation schedules or whether or not you have birth control on hand. A vasectomy is a permanent birth control option that leaves you and your partner with the opportunity to focus on one another. Go on, enjoy the moment without the worry of an unwanted pregnancy!

And gentlemen, let’s be real—women constantly carry the burden of either trying to get pregnant or not get pregnant. Then as mothers, they spend nine months growing and then birthing a baby. Years of birth control, pregnancy and childbirth can be incredibly hard on a woman’s body. Men, it’s time to man up!

When performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr. Edmunds, a vasectomy won’t change your testosterone or affect your drive. Everything will work as it did before—now you just can’t get anyone pregnant!

It's Up To you Why Dr. Tom Edmunds

While a vasectomy is a relatively simple procedure, it’s still surgery so it’s important to choose a surgeon with experience and specialty in this area. We are talking about a pretty important part of your anatomy, after all!
Dr. Tom Edmunds, also known as “Dr. Snippy”, has performed more than 5,000 vasectomies in his career so you can trust he knows his stuff. He’s also had the procedure done himself, so he knows about the experience as both a surgeon and patient.

As a proud father, Dr. Edmunds knows parenthood is truly one of life’s greatest joys. As a physician, he also knows that many pregnancies are unintended—in fact, studies show nearly 50% of all pregnancies in the US are accidental. Whether unwanted or mistimed, an unintended pregnancy can lead to relationship strain, financial instability, serious health challenges for the mother and more. And, with growing restrictions on women’s access to reproductive health, it’s never been a more important time for men to step up.

Vasectomy 101 Frequently Asked Questions

We get it–a vasectomy feels like a weird thing to talk about, but it’s what we do! It’s a serious decision, and Dr. Edmunds is known for his calm and knowledgeable manner to help men (and their partners) make an informed decision. We want you to feel like you can ask us anything, and here are some of the most commonly asked questions:

Do you still ejaculate after a vasectomy?

Yes. Your semen will still look, feel and taste the same. You’d have to look under a microscope to see the difference (no sperm present).

Does a vasectomy affect your sex drive?

No. A vasectomy only interferes with sperm entering your semen (and getting anyone pregnant). Your drive and pleasure will not change. If anything, sex can be more enjoyable and spontaneous because there is no risk of an unplanned pregnancy.

How long do you have to wait to have sex after a vasectomy?

Dr. Edmunds recommends waiting ten days until resuming gentle sexual activity, but use birth control! You are not sterile until your semen is checked after 20 orgasms (yes, 20!). Protected sex is critical during this time.

How do you know if a vasectomy was successful?

Capitol Urology makes it easy to test the effectiveness of your vasectomy. About 12 weeks after your procedure, you will bring a semen sample into the office and we’ll test it immediately in our office.

Are vasectomies reversible?

A vasectomy can be reversed, however it’s a complicated procedure that isn’t guaranteed to be successful. Dr. Edmunds does not perform vasectomy reversals.

How long is the recovery from a vasectomy?

The benefit of a no-scalpel vasectomy is shorter recovery time and less pain. Most patients are back to usual activity after a few days of rest.

How much does a vasectomy cost?

While a vasectomy by Dr. Edmunds is quick and relatively painless, it’s still surgery. Capitol Urology’s cost for a vasectomy is $1,500. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required for all vasectomy consultations, which can be applied to procedure costs. As a courtesy to you, we will file an electronic claim with your primary insurance, however the cost of service is ultimately your responsibility, so it is important for you to understand your individual insurance policy and coverage.
